The Need for Mobile Analytics

As companies begin to embrace mobility, chances are they are forgetting one major and critical aspect: user analytics. As we work hard to perfect our users’ mobile experience (which is a journey, not a destination), we need to make sure we have the data to make the decisions around what to build next and what we might consider removing or refactoring.

BUSINESS CHALLENGES

What data do we need in order to make these decisions? The data we collect should answer these questions:

  • What should I add next to our mobile solution?

  • How are users using our mobile app?

  • Where are users using our mobile app?

  • What devices are they using it on?

  • What OS versions are they using?

  • What time of day are they using it?

  • Are they getting exceptions as they use it?

Customized dashboards set up in Salesforce help us and our customers keep an eye on these questions and how they change day to day and month to month as more users adopt the mobile app and use it in differing circumstances. Example dashboards and reports are listed below:

For any solution extended to our users, Cloud Sherpas needs to ensure we know how they are and are not using the features we develop. In today’s minimalist view around user experience and functionality, our users are mainly concerned with doing what they need to do quickly. The days of extremely complex navigation, dropdowns everywhere and lost time trying to accomplish what you do 90% of the time are over. We need to design our applications around knowledge of what our end users want to do and what they actually do with our applications. If we keep adding features just for the sake of adding them, we are not looking out for the best interests of our user community.

One word of caution: analytic data should be supplemented by the use of surveys and focus groups. Analytics alone can’t paint the entire picture!

By incorporating analytics upfront, you can ensure that you are capturing the right amount of information to help make future decisions around mobility in your workforce.
