Peek Into The Future: How Google Uses Technology

Last month, AllThingsD, an online news outlet focusing on technology, internet and media, published an article on how Google works, including how and why Google employees use certain technologies.

According to Google CIO Ben Fried, Google mainly uses its own technology – Gmail and Drive for communication and document storage, Android devices for mobile needs, etc. – and why not? After all, its technologies are among the most popular for businesses and consumers alike. But the article noted that Google does use some outside technologies and pointed to two in particular: Salesforce and ServiceNow.

A follow-up article from Internet Evolution, an online news site focusing on the future of the internet, expanded on Google’s use of outside technologies. In this article, Mitch Wagner wrote: “Reports on how major vendors use technology are always interesting. When the technology is still emerging, like the cloud, a look at Google is like a look into the future.”

And if Google is any indication, then the future “cloud IT stack” is comprised of solutions from Google Enterprise, salesforce.com and ServiceNow.

Solutions from each of these three cloud vendors are certainly innovative, but they aren’t necessarily futuristic; thousands of organizations already rely on Google Apps and other Enterprise solutions, Salesforce Sales Cloud, Service Cloud or Marketing Cloud or ServiceNow. What makes Google such a pioneer isn’t simply its use of each solution, but rather the fact that it uses all of these solutions in tandem. To run its business, Google makes all of these solutions work with one another, not just alongside one another.

Cloud technologies are still relatively young, and, thus, most organizations that have adopted these solutions have not yet taken full advantage of all the benefits they offer. In contrast, Google – who was born in the cloud – has a more mature program that includes enhancements and integrations. It is this point that makes getting a glimpse into how Google works really like taking a peek into the future.

Like its peer Google, salesforce.com is another example of a cloud pioneer whose own cloud program boasts integrations. Specifically, salesforce.com has integrated Google Apps into its own solutions.

Integrations like these are valuable because they enable the systems to communicate and share data, which allows for enhanced decision-making capabilities, among other benefits.

And while Google and salesforce.com’s cloud programs may be “futuristic,” they are far from unattainable for today’s organizations. The first step, of course, is deciding to move to the cloud, and seeking assistance in the form of cloud advisory services to help properly plan your current and future cloud program can put you on the right path toward achieving this goal from the start. From initial advisory to implementation and enhancement, working with an experienced partner like a Cloud Services Brokerage (who offers services that span the entire lifecycle of cloud solutions, including integrations for the more mature cloud programs) can help you every step of the way and, ultimately, help you move into the future too.
